Comrades:
As the years go on, we have bid farewell to many of our faithful Comrades and bid a hardy “Welcome” to our new Comrades. The cycle goes on, as does the improvements and programs in our Post. I would to take this time and mention a few of the improvements and programs that we have initiated.

We have started an Annual Family Day at the Post, having put aside funds to have the a dedicated to fun and games for Post Members and their families. We have a BBQ, and all sorts of activities for the kids to participate in. We have implemented a Family Activity/Awards Committee. One of our recently added members, Karl Conboy, heads it up. If anyone has any ideas to submit, you may pass them along to Karl. He can be reached on his email at karlconboy@yahoo.com .

We now have wireless internet services available at the Post free of charge for our members, so bring along your laptops next visit! We also have a computer system available for members use in the Bar area.

Some of the ongoing Post improvements and upgrades that are either in the process of being completed or have been are as follows: air conditioning improvement, outside awning added to bar windows, dehumidifiers in the downstairs hall, an ATM machine in the bar for our members' convenience, and a major re-roofing project underway. This is just to mention a few of the ongoing infrastructure projects that will help keep the Post a viable place for our Members to have in the future.

I would also like to mention the need for new members to join, so any current members who knows someone that is qualified to join, bring them along next time you come in.

Before closing, I wish the also mention the ongoing need for members to join and participate in the Post Color Guard. The Color Guard is an essential part of our Posts interaction with the local community. They represent the Post and the Membership whenever they are seen in uniform. So, if you feel like you wish to be part of this group, please contact myself or any of the Color Guard Members. God Bless Our Troops!

Thoughts of Our Gold Star Mother, Mrs. Helen Schulte Bova

Comrades:
This update is dedicated to Brannen – Van Den Berg VFW Post’s Gold Star Mother, who recently passed away.
Neither my wife, Mary Alice, nor I knew her very well. Most of what we knew of her came from post members, family and meeting with her at out various post functions. We do know that she will be sadly missed, but also remembered very fondly. The following are the thoughts from a few of our fellow Post Commanders.
Terry Meyer, Past Post Commander
Mary Alice Meyer, Past Post Commander

Comrades and Members of Our Ladies Auxiliary:

I was overseas when her son was killed in action. Hennie was a good friend of mine and of my brother. I was a team mate of his and also worked with him. I received the news of his death and my heart and thoughts went out to his Mom and family. I wish I could have been there when they brought him home. Since that time and especially at the post when I would see our Gold Star mother and her very sweet smile I remember his smile also. God Bless and be at rest Helen.

Post Commander

Comrades and Ladies:
This is but a short note to remember our Gold Star Mother. Helen Schulte Bova was a mother, grandmother and a great grandmother. Helen lost a son, Army Corporal Henry Gerard Schulte in Vietnam during the war. Although deep in grief over the loss of her son, she picked herself up and went forward one step at a time. She wanted to ensure that the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country would always be remembered. Helen was our Post’s Gold Star Mother. Every Memorial Day she would honor her son Henry by joining us for the annual Memorial Day parade. Riding in a convertible as our Gold Star Mother, she always had a kind word and smile for all. The folks that lined the streets would remember the ultimate sacrifice her son made in service of our country. Her dedication to all veterans will always be remembered by our VFW Brothers and Sisters. Her death was a shock to us all. I know that she will hold a very special place in all of our hearts and thoughts. She will always be remembered as one who cared greatly for what the VFW stands for.
With great remembrance,
Ken Rain

Comrades:

I would like to take this opportunity to give you an update on the current events going on with our post.

First, I would like to thank the membership for supporting me this past year. It has gone by quite fast!

This past year, we had a very successful program in supporting our Veterans, their Families, and the local community. Some of our accomplishments were the support of The Fisher House, Operation Uplink, K-9’s for Disabled Veterans, and many others. We have supported our local community with  supporting the local Scout Troops, and having our Color Guard participate in many local activities. This is just a short list of the many activities that our Post should be proud of. These are some of the programs that I hope will continue throughout 2009- 2010

Our Memorial Day parade in New Paltz went great! The weather was nice, the crowd was very supportive and our parade participants were wonderful. Thank you to the New Paltz High school band, the police and fire fighters, the scouts, newcomers like the West Point band and Plattekill veteran’s association and ALL the rest of the participants. A special thanks to Sgt. Nick Meyer for his moving speech as our guest speaker. The town also gets a big thanks for all their support as well.

Last year, our Post, once again sponsored an information booth at the annual Ulster County Fair. In coordination with our Ladies Auxiliary, we passed out information on our post’s activities, programs, and membership applications. Donations were also made to our Buddy Poppy Program. It was a very good opportunity for us to show “Our Nation’s Flag”, let the local community get to know us, and see what the VFW is all about. We were very warmly welcomed with the public at the fair, and hopefully we will be able to continue this endeavor on an annual basis. Special thanks all our volunteers that helped make this outing a success!

Our 20 Week BBQ was also an outstanding success again this year! Thanks to all our volunteers, and the folks out there that bought our tickets to make it turn out the way it did! May the next bar-B-Q on 8/22/09 be a great one.

If you have not attended a monthly meeting recently, please do so. Your opinion on how to improve our Post, and events or programs you would like to see happen is very welcomed! Please, check out our Website’s Links for additional information on upcoming events, and the latest pictures on Post activities.

Please extend your support to the incoming commander, Dave Deyo and Sr. Vice, Ken Rain and their staff. May they have as successful a year as I did. The best of luck to you all.

It will be very nice to see you all over the next year.

Sincerely,
Mary Alice Meyer

Our 20 Week BBQ was also an outstanding success again this year! Thanks to all our volunteers, and the folks out there that bought our tickets to make it turn out the way it did! We’re looking forward to this year’s 20 week to be as much of a success as the last! Tickets should go on sale the end of March.

We upgraded the TV’s to flatscreens and also purchased our own pool table, which has no charge for use! The large TV is now in the pool room for your enjoyment. We also upgraded the security system for the safety of the patrons too.

If you have not attended a monthly meeting recently, please do so. They fall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 7PM. Your opinion on how to improve our Post, and events or programs you would like to see happen is very welcomed! Please, check out our Website’s Links for additional information on upcoming events, and the latest pictures on Post activities.

Post elections are due April, so we send out the attendance cards to all members so they have the opportunity to vote for the command staff in March. Please update your address if necessary, so we can send out these and the 20 week tickets, if you require any.

If any of our members need to contact me on any issue, please call the post and leave a message, or drop us an email at the Post Adjutants email TerryMeyer@optonline.net. If there are any family members currently serving overseas. Please let us know. We can send out a care package for them. All the best for a safe, economically better and continuous healthy New Year to all!

Sincerely,
Mary Alice Meyer
