Greetings Comrades,

I would like to take this opportunity to give you an update on the current events going on with our post.

In June, our Post Delegates attended the NY State VFW Convention in Binghamton where we helped elect the VFW NY State Commander, Bob Barnhart from the Highfalls Post.  His Special Project for this year will be to help support the Fisher Houses located near Veteran’s Hospitals. The Fisher House Program was established as a place for recovering veteran’s family members to stay at a discounted rate while visiting. It is a very worthy cause and I hope all our Post member’s will help to support this project.

During July, I am very happy to report that our Post was selected to host the State Commander’s Homecoming Event. The planned chicken BBQ turned out to be an enormous success, with all going home with full bellies, and pleasant memories of our Post! Among our guests were the VFW National Sr. Vice Commander, the New Jersey VFW State Commander, and numerous New York VFW Past State Commanders. I would like to thank all our Post members that participated in the Post clean up and BBQ preparation for this event.

Also in late July and the first week of August, our Post had an Information Booth set up at the Ulster County Fair. In coordination with our Ladies Auxiliary, we passed out information on our post’s activities, programs, and membership applications.  Donations were also made to our Buddy Poppy Program. It was a very good opportunity for us to show “Our Nation’s Flag”, let the local community get to know us, and see what the VFW is all about. We were very warmly welcomed with the public at the fair, and hopefully we will be able to continue this endeavor on an annual basis. The VFW NY State Commander stopped by to chat with our folks manning the booth, and encouraged us to continue with our recruiting drive. Special thanks all our volunteers that helped make this outing a success!

Our upcoming 20 Week BBQ is an annual event that we are all looking forward to. If you have not purchased your ticket yet, please stop by the Post and do so. We will also have additional tickets for sale at the day of the event.

If you have not attended a monthly meeting recently, please do so. Your opinion on how to improve our Post, and events or programs you would like to see happen is very welcomed!

Lastly, check out our web site’s links for additional information on upcoming events, and the latest pictures on Post activities.

If any of our members need to contact me on any issue, please call the post and leave a message, or drop me an email at TerryMeyer@optonline.net.

God Bless our Troops,
Terry

Commander’s Update

Happy New Year Comrades!

I would like to take this time to update everyone on our Post’s Activities and an overview of the last few months of 2007.

During August of last year, our 20 Week Club was an outstanding success! We prepared and served 350 chicken BBQ dinners. The weather was perfect, and all went home hopefully having enjoyed themselves.

One of the events that took place in September was our Color Guards participation on VFW Day at the VA Castle Point Hospital Complex. This is an on going annual event that many of the Hudson Valley’s VFW Post’s take part in. Another successful event was setting up an. information booth at Plattekill Day. Our Volunteers spoke with many of our neighbors, and also helped us to recruit some new members.

November brought us Veteran’s Day, which the Post Color Guard and Membership participated in a Salute to Our Nation’s Flag and Open House to all members of our Armed Forces, Veterans, and their families. Our Post also celebrated our Ladies Auxiliary 60th Anniversary along with our 61st. This was a catered event at the Post. Many awards of recognition were given out, and all reported a good time.

December was a busy month at the Post. Our Color Guard participated in a “Remember Pearl Harbor “ event hosted by Marlboro High School. Later, along with the NYS Submarine Veteran’s Association we hosted another ceremony at the Post along with a dinner. The Post also hosted our annual Post Christmas Party, and the BOCES Special Education Children’s Christmas Party.

2007 was a very good year for the Post in many ways. We hosted the NYS VFW Commander’s Homecoming Event, welcomed 11 new members that joined us, and supported many activities. Some of which are as follows:

The Fisher House Program, the National VFW Military Assistance Program, Christmas Trees for the Troops, the 173rd Airborne Brigade Association, Hospice, Sloan- Kettering Cancer Research, VA Medical Center Adaptive Sports, the Boy Scouts, Viet Nam Veteran’s Memorial Center, Operation Uplink, and many others.

We have also re-invested in our Post in maintenance and upgrades. This past year has seen improvements to our water supply system, air conditioning in the upstairs kitchen, security upgrades, and many other things that go unnoticed.
